The LGBTQ+ community, that being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and gender non-conformers, celebrate Pride month in order to raise awareness of the continued oppression whilst also demonstrating in a way that is fun and positive. This movement against hate crimes and the freedom of sexual orientation and gender has grown in recognition and influence since the very first protests with the Stonewall riots in New York City, 1969.
